Truvada Uses

Truvada is used to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1) infection, or reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Truvada is combination of 2 medicines in 1 pill (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). Truvada cannot cure HIV or AIDS. To prevent yourself from getting the HIV virus, always practice safe sex, use condoms, and never reuse or share needles or any item with bodily fluid on them. Truvada use to treat HIV-1:

  • Truvada alone is not a complete treatment for HIV and should always be taken with other anti-HIV medication.
  • Truvada works by blocking the reverse transcriptase enzyme in the body, making it more difficult for HIV cells to multiply. This helps decrease the amount of HIV in the blood. It also can help increase the amount of CD4+ (T) cells in the blood to help fight off infection.

Truvada use to reduce the risk of HIV-1:

  • High risk patients who are HIV negative may reduce the risk of getting HIV when Truvada is already in the blood before being exposed to the virus. Truvada should always be used along with safe sex practices.

Truvada Dosage

The recommended dosage for TRUVADA in patients 12 years and older is one pill a day (200 mg of emtricitabine and 300 mg of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). Patients should not miss a dose of Truvada, since that lowers the amount of medicine in the blood. If you take Truvada to treat HIV-1, you must take it along with other anti-HIV medicine. Consult with your doctor to find the right plan for you. If you take Truvada to reduce the risk of HIV-1 infection, you should take Truvada every day along with safe sex practices and other preventative measures. Take Truvada every day, not only when you think you may be exposed to infection.
