Somavert Uses

Somavert is used to treat acromegaly when the disease cannot be controlled by surgery or radiation, or when these options are not appropriate. Somavert is a man-made protein, similar to human growth hormone, that works by blocking the effects of growth hormone and by reducing the amount of IGF-I to normal levels.

Somavert Dosage

Somavert is administered through an injection under the skin into the upper arm, upper thigh, stomach, or buttock usually once daily. The doctor should give directions go the patient on all preparation and usage if they are to inject this medication by themselves. The patient should not use more than 30 milligrams of daily injection unless directed by the doctor. The doctor will determine the dosage based on the medical condition and response to treatment.

  • Adult: initial (loading) dose of 40 mg given subcutaneously under the doctor supervision.
  • Thereafter, a recommended dosage: 10 to 30 mg given subcutaneously once daily.

Somavert Side Effects

You should not use Somavert if you are allergic to it. The blood sugars may reduce when on Somavert medication. Prior to medication, the patient should tell the doctor if they have a tumor that secretes growth hormone or other conditions like diabetes, liver disease, or latex allergy. A lump may appear under the skin where the injection is administered in the same spot, the patient should change the injection site daily.
