Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a contraceptive that is used to prevent pregnancy. It is made up of two hormones: an estrogen and a progestin. Ortho Tri-Cyclen primarily works by inhibiting ovulation, which is the release of the female ovum during a normal menstrual cycle. Ortho Tri-Cyclen also modifies the cervical mucus thickening it, thereby preventing the sperms from swimming to the ovum leading to fertilization. It also alters the uterus lining, preventing the attachment of a fertilized egg. In addition to preventing pregnancy, oral contraceptives like Ortho Tri-Cyclen can make the periods more regular for those with irregular menses. Ortho Tri-Cyclen Dosage

Ortho Tri-Cyclen should be taken as prescribed by the physician. The pills should be taken daily after every 24 hours. When the first packet runs out, you begin a new one the next day and continue taking them. A pack of Ortho Tri-Cyclen contains 28 pills. 21 pills are the active medication while 7 reminder pills have no medicine in them. The typical dosage of Ortho Tri-Cyclen for adults is as follows:

  • Sunday Start: take one white active tablet, the first Sunday after your menstruation starts. This should be done even if you are still experiencing your period
  • You should then take one dark blue, white or light blue active tablet pill every day for the next 21 days
  • Then take 1 dark green reminder tablet for the next 7 days
  • After exhausting all the 28 tablets, you should start a new packet the next day
