Methotrexate is an antifolate and antimetabolite drug which treats certain diseases associated with rapid growth of cells, e.g. cancer cells, skin cells, bone marrow cells, placenta cells. Methotrexate may be administered orally in the form of tablets or in the form of injection (intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intrathecal).
Methotrexate is a DMARD – an anti-rheumatic disease modifier drug. It is a medication mainly used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It is also used in the treatment of the following conditions:
- Psoriasis –affects the skin and is characterized by patches that are red and with scales.
- Some forms of cancers e.g. lung cancer, breast cancer, leukemia, etc.
Methotrexate works by blocking the secretion of some enzymes and, depending on the condition, this will either limit the rate of growth of cells or slow down the activity of immune system. Normal dosage is one or two every week, but this will largely depend on the severity of the condition.
