Drug Name:
Generic Name(s): fluorouracil topical
Drug Class: Antimetabolites
Treats: solar keratoses, superficial basal carcinoma, actinic keratoses, Bowen"s disease, psoriasis, porokeratosis, genital warts

Carac is indicated for the treatment of basal cell cancer of skin and actinic keratoses, which is a precancerous skin condition. Carac"s anticancer properties help in fighting the cancer cells and preventing them from dividing. In cancerous tumors, the cells divide in an uncontrolled way unlike in normal tissues. Cancer cells do not go through the usual checks and balances that limit cell division. In normal cells, they stop to divide when they get in contact with other cells in a mechanism referred to as contact inhibition. During cell division, the cells should produce DNA in each new cell. The production of the DNA is largely dependent on the synthesis of RNA material that acts as the messenger at the time of production of DNA. Carac works to prevent the formation of RNA thus preventing the formation of DNA, and this means that cells cannot multiply.

Carac Uses

Carac is a cream with the active ingredient of fluorouracil. Carac is used in treating scaly skin overgrowths or pre-cancerous skin conditions like solar keratoses or actinic keratoses. It is also used to treat superficial basal cell carcinoma. Carac belongs to a group of drugs known as antimetabolites. This drug interferes with cell formation and growth, causing death of the cells that are growing rapidly, like abnormal skin cells.
