Atorvastatin belongs to a group of drugs known as HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors. This class of drugs is used in the treatment of dyslipidemia, a condition where cholesterol and triglyceride levels are elevated in the blood. If left untreated, it may lead to serious cardiovascular risks such as heart attack and stroke. This is why atorvastatin is used not only in the treatment of dyslipidemia, but also as a prophylactic against further heart disease in afflicted patients. As an HMG-Co-A Reductase Inhibitor, atorvastatin interrupts the pathway that forms cholesterol. In doing so, it will reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol (commonly referred to as "bad" cholesterol), all the while increasing the levels of HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol). This has been shown to significantly decrease the risk of cardiovascular events in these patients. However, there are numerous serious side effects and interactions the patient will need to be aware of, as many interactions lead to the potentially fatal condition of rhabdomyolysis.

Atorvastatin Calcium is a drug found in the group of medical drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors or statins. It is often prescribed to patients with type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease, as it treats high cholesterol, lowers the risk of stroke and heart attacks, as well as treats other heart diseases and complications.

Atorvastatin Calcium also reduces the levels of bad cholesterol known as low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides in the blood while increasing the levels of good cholesterol or high-density lipoprotein.

Severe reactions on Atorvastatin Calcium include memory problems, itching, and swelling; stop using this drug and consult a doctor immediately if any of these side effects occur.
